William Gracey is a supporting character in the 2023 film Haunted Mansion. He is the film's version of Master Gracey, played by J.R. Adduci.

History[]

William Gracey was a wealthy socialite who is the first-known owner of Gracey Manor, a large antebellum estate in New Orleans. He had purchased the property to settle with his wife Eleanor. When Eleanor died from yellow fever, William became inconsolable and hired the famed medium Madame Leota to try and summon her ghost. Instead, he was contacted by the Hatbox Ghost posing as his wife who drove him to suicide by arsenic as part of a ritual. Since then, he became a ghost who wanders the mansion with a lantern, searching for Eleanor's spirit.

His ghost was summoned by Harriet whom he advised to contact Madame Leota. After this, he was found by Ben Matthias as part of their reverse-séance, where he gave Ben some information about the Hatbox Ghost's nature.

Following Crump's defeat, Gracey and the rest of the ghosts chose to stay in the Mansion and welcomed their new human friends to take up residence.

Trivia[]

  • This is the second version of Master Gracey to be named William Gracey, the first coming from the SLG comics. He has a moustache like that version of the character does in his time as a pirate.
  • This version of Master Gracey commits suicide, similarly to various other versions of Master Gracey, although he is the first to poison himself as the others hanged themselves in a similar manner to the Ghost Host from the original attraction. The 2023 movie separates its depiction of Master Gracey and the Ghost Host.
  • Like all incarnations of the character, Master Gracey's name is a tribute to Imagineer Yale Gracey.
  • Master Gracey's late-wife Eleanor's name may be a tribute to voice-actress Eleanor Audley, whom voiced Madame Leota in the attraction.
