Three of a Kind is a comic story from issue 7 of Slave Labor Graphics's Haunted Mansion series.

Summary[]

Continuing from On a Tightrope's framing device, the Ghost Host asks the ghost boy if he wants to hear another story of the Stretching Room's paintings, in this case the story of the Quicksand Men.

The three men are a set of gamblers known as Hobbs, Big Hobbs, and Skinny Hobbs, known for cheating and scamming. When playing a game of cards in a swamp-side tavern and each one pulls a winning hand, the fourth player, Bartholomew Gore (William Gracey using an alias), pulls his guns on them after seeing through such a blatantly obvious attempt at cheating through too many aces in the deck. The men beg for their lives and flee out the back into the swamp, with Big Hobbs holding a gun to a baby as a hostage (actually a very obvious rag doll) to keep from being followed. Trudging through the mud to get back to their horses, Big Hobbs proposes someone carry the others across a mud puddle and they end up playing another game to determine who will carry the others, failing to realize they have stepped into quicksand. With Skinny Hobbs ending up on the bottom of the stack, he ends up realizing that the others cheated and they begin another game.

The ghost boy asks if they ever made it out of the swamp, with the Ghost Host directed him to the swamps at the edge of the Mansion, where the trio, not realizing they drowned in the quicksand, are still stacked on top of each other playing cards, while the boy wonders aloud why they don't just float out of the quicksand, briefly catching Skinny Hobbs's attention.
