Haunted Mansion Wiki

The Sinister Eleven are a group of haunted portraits located at the Haunted Mansion.

In the rides[]

The Sinister 11 appear only in Florida and Tokyo. The portraits consist of:

Right side:

  1. The Opera Glasses Lady
  2. Count Dracula
  3. The Couple
  4. Jack the Ripper
  5. The Witch of Walpurgis

Left side:

  1. The Hatchet Man (Ghost Host)
  2. Medusa
  3. The Arsonist
  4. Ms. April December
  5. The Ogre (Rasputin)

Above the Library entrance:

  1. The Mariner

The Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion had this effect from 1971 until the 2007 refurbishment. While most of these portraits are still present in the mansion, their eyes no longer glow and follow the guests as they move past them. It was then replaced by the Portrait Corridor found in Disneyland. The original portraits hang in the following areas.

Present locations of the Sinister 11
Load area Floating candelabra staircase Ballroom
The Arsonist The Couple Opera Glasses Lady
Jack the Ripper April-December
The Mariner
Hatchet Man
Witch of Walpurgis
Old Man

With Medusa becoming a changing portrait, her Sinister Eleven portrait ended up in the Disney Archives.

In Tokyo Disneyland, the effect remained identical to what it used to be in WDW before 2007: guests travel down the Portrait Hall in a doom buggy, just after passing under the candelabra landing. There, the subjects of the portraits stare back, their eyes dimly glowing and following guests as they proceed down the corridor.

Haunted Mansion Holiday Nightmare[]

During the Holiday season, the portraits are replaced with ones of characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), all of whom watch the guests as ride by. These portraits include the likes of:

Right side:

  1. The two witches
  2. Dr. Finkelstein
  3. Sally
  4. The vampires
  5. The Harlequin Demon

Left side:

  1. The Mayor of Halloween Town
  2. The Wolfman
  3. The Town Band
  4. The Undersea Gal
  5. The Clown with the tear-away face

Above the Library entrance:

  1. Jack and Sally embracing atop the snow-covered Spiral Hill in the cemetery from the end of the film.

Unused portraits[]

There are two non-changing portrait, Sinister 11 type portraits which would never be put in the final attraction, those being of historic figures:

  • Guy Fawkes: A 16th century British revolutionary who attempted to blow up British Parliament in order to try and kill the oppressive King James.
  • Ivan the Terrible: The first Tsar of Russia who was a notorious madman, tyrant and warlord and allegedly even accidentally murdered his own son.

Asides from these two there are several changing portraits which could have been considered to be used as Sinister 11 style portraits.
