The Sea Captain is a ghost who briefly appears in the Haunted Mansion.

Description[]

Design[]

The Captain is dressed in what appears to be 17th-early 19th Century attire, has grey hair, a moustache and he holds a spyglass.

History[]

One of the original Ken Anderson scripts for the Haunted Mansion involved a character known as Captain Gore who would have been the ghost of a notorious Caribbean pirate captain. Eventually this plot went unused but the Captain was included in the Great Hall sequence as a small nod, whether or not he is intended to be Captain Gore is unknown. The animatronic mould of the sea-captain is actually recycled from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and was originally created for the Auctioneer in the ride who himself was visually based off of Marc Davis' concept-art for Bartholomew Roberts, a proposed incarnation of Captain Gore.

Appearances[]

Attraction[]

Sea Captain Out of Coffin

The Captain emerging from the hearse.

The Captain appears briefly in the Great Hall were he floats inside from the crashed hearse in the doorway along with other ghosts.

2003 video game[]

The captain appears as one of the six friendly ghosts enslaved by Atticus Thorn in the 2003 game. Sporting a pirate-like appearance, which falls in line with his identification as "Pirate's Ghost", he is first seen with the other friendly ghosts observing Zeke Holloway examining the foyer, commenting on his worth of helping break the mansion's curse, while also disagreeing with the Organist's labeling of Zeke as a "beggar", stating that they must let anyone help them to be set free from Thorn's control and destroy the curse. The character later appears in the attic where he converses with Zeke and gives him a pirate ring, which gives the latter a total of 999 souls and also acts as the key to open the Vault of Shadows. The captain is last seen with the other ghosts thanking Zeke for his help and wishes him well with his endeavors. It is later implied that the captain has become one of Zeke's mentors and guides, alongside Madame Leota, in his career as an author.

In this incarnation, the captain is given a backstory on his death: his crew turned against him in revenge for hoarding a greater share of treasure than the others.

Disney Kingdoms[]

The sea captain appears in group shots in Disney Kingdoms: The Haunted Mansion. What is notable is that in this comic, the sea captain is explicitly separate from, "The Captain" who is a direct adaptation of Captain Gore.

Merchandise[]

Captain-bartholomew-gore

The vinylmation figure identifying him as Bartholomew Gore.

For the Haunted Mansion Vinylmation line by Casey Jones, the Sea Captain is named, "Captain Bartholomew Gore". This line was however known for misidentifying characters (E.G., the Traveler with Phineas P. Pock).
