Rowlf the Dog is a character from The Muppets
Background[]
Rowlf the Dog first appeared in 1962 in a series of commercials for Purina Dog Chow before finding nationwide fame and acclaim as Jimmy Dean's comedic sidekick on The Jimmy Dean Show from 1963-1966. Rowlf became a staple of the larger Muppet cast ever since as a wisecracking piano player, though Jim Henson's 1991 death lead to his character being largely retired from speaking roles for almost a decade before Bill Barretta took up the part and the character gradually started regaining more prominence.
