While a young ghost gazes on the portrait of the Tightrope Girl in the Stretching Room, the Ghost Host begins telling the story of Daisy de la Cruz and how appearances can be deceiving.
Daisy was a tightrope walker in a traveling circus that had found a permanent home in the bayou, with her trailer being stuck in the mud on a small island connected to shore by a line of rope hanging over a pond of alligators. Her hourly shows were quite popular and she accumulated a number of gentlemen callers bringing her gifts, with a group of seven consistently hanging around the show to see her. After one night of performances, one of her regular visitors, a wealthy old Creole widower named Papa de Janiero, makes a marriage proposal. She rejects his proposal, explaining she's already got a family in the form of her alligators, but still offers him a place in that family and transforms the man into an alligator. The transformed Papa de Janiero learns that the alligators in the pond are all previous victims of the witch's magic and they are waiting for the day she slips and falls so they can take her revenge and devour her.
When the ghost boy asks if the gators ever did get their revenge, the painting moves and shows Daisy's fate, frightening the boy while the Ghost Host laughs.
