May, known in local folklore as "The Woman in Black", is a ghostly woman in black with inky dark hair and eyes haunting the bayous around Gracey Manor, looking for lost children. When a frightened young boy wanders too deep into the bayou and has a brief encounter with her, he ends up running terrified into the Mansion where he meets a ghost child named Victor, who is bound to the Mansion's interior by its enigmatic rules. After being told by Madame Leota to go face his fears, he ends up encountering the Woman in Black in the swamps again and learns that she's been searching for her son. The boy realizes she must be searching for Victor and ends up reuniting the two. In the years since, the boy grew up to become a hearse driver bringing new souls to the Mansion and asks the reader to give May and Victor his regards.
