Main Street, U.S.A. is the first themed land of Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. It is an entryway to these Disney Parks and even serves as a sort of hub.

The area is inspired by Walt Disney's hometown of Marceline, Missouri and themed around being an idyllic portrayal of turn-of-the-20th-century America. The area is mainly home to live performances, meet & greets, shops, food-services and transportation.

Haunted Mansion connections[]

Disneyland[]

Goff Mansion

Imagineer Harper Goff's artwork for a Haunted Mansion found adjacent to a church and church-yard in Main-Street U.S.A.

Main Street USA was originally considered to be where the Haunted Mansion would be located in Disneyland. It would have been planned to hold a cathedral and small cemetery which lead to the derelict mansion.

The classic posters for the Haunted Mansion can be found alongside those promoting other attractions in the tunnels which guests enter from.

In Disneyland's Main Street there is a fortune-teller machine with the name of Esmeralda. Esmeralda's tarot cards feature illustrations of Sally Slater, the Quicksand Men, Alexander Nitrokoff and Constance Hatchaway. These cards' artwork all being lifted from the Haunted Mansion's Stretching Room.

Fargo's Palm Parlour is a closed off building on Main Street which serves as a tribute to Rolly Crump while also containing allusions to the Haunted Mansion and the Museum of the Weird. The location is themed around being a fortune-teller's business with the window reading, "Fargo's Palm Parlour; Predictions that will haunt you; Bazaar, whimsical & Weird. Designs to die for Roland F. Crump assistant to the Palm Reader". On the window, concept-art made by Crump appears including the Coffin Clock, a tower from It's a Small World in Fantasyland, and Maui from the Enchanted Tiki Room.

A figure from Main Street is referenced at the, "Popcorn outside the Haunted Mansion" stand of New Orleans Square which has a, "Roastie Toastie" modelled after the 1925 depiction of the Phantom of the Opera. This is because the Phantom of the Opera used to be a meet n' greet character found at the Main Street Cinema of Disneyland during the 1960s.

Outside of the Main Street Cinema is an office for the, "Disneyland Casting Agency". One of their postings reads, " Ghosts and Restless Spirits Wanted Seeking ghosts and goblins to perform with ghoulish delight in haunted house musical. Spirited performers only. Auditions at Ghost Relations". The casting agency also references the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad mythos by asking for carriage drivers to work in Rainbow Ridge and performers for Slue-Foot Sue's Golden Horseshoe Saloon.

The Ghost Post[]

Main Street was a pivotal location in the interactive Ghost Post game's scavenger hunt. This interactive game started with guests having to go see Esmeralda and be given cards instructing them on where to find ghosts who have been trapped outside of the Haunted Mansion in the park. One of these ghosts was named Abigail and was trapped in Fargo's Palm Parlor on Main Street behind a door which guests had to knock patterns on to free her.

Disneyland Paris[]

At the Disneyland Railroad's station in Main Street there is a mural portraying several figures waiting for a train. On the mural is a depiction of Melanie Ravenswood with the silhouette of the Phantom behind her. Melanie's pose and hair-style is resembling that of Sally Slater from the original Haunted Mansion attraction.[1]

There is an advertisement on Main Street for, "River Excursions" on the, "S.S. Mark Twain". The artwork along with this add features the Thunder Mesa location of Fort Comstock in the background. This advertisement can also be found along the Rivers of America in Disneyland.

Disneyland's Haunted Mansion references an element of the Main Street, U.S.A. of Disneyland Paris. In the Pet Cemetery of the Haunted Mansion there is a crypt dedicated to one Penny the Elephant. Penny originated as a statue in the Penny Arcade of Disneyland Paris' Main-Street (hence the name Penny) which would later be moved to the Adventureland of Disneyland.

Hong Kong Disneyland[]

In Hong Kong Disneyland, Main Street USA is where the Main Street Haunted Hotel was attraction was located. This attraction having been inspired by unrealized Ken Anderson concepts for the Haunted Mansion and containing parallels with the classic ride. It was themed around being a hotel on Main Street, haunted by a murderous ghost named Victoria Maxwell who had apparently been their since 1889. The attraction was located on the Plaza Grounds, a sort of black box theatre-space found adjacent to the Plaza Inn restaurant.

This experience lasted from 2007 to 2011 and was replaced by a similar attraction known as the Graves Academy, a haunted boarding school inhabited by the ghosts of its students. This only lasted from 2012 to 2014 and would be replaced with the much more popular The Nightmare Experiment horror walk-through where guests enter the Royal Laboratory For The Scientific Study of Phantasmagorian Phenomena and are met by the evil Dr. J.T. Wu who uses them to experiment on the nature of nightmares. Guests would walk through many scenes modelled after Disney Villains, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and the Princess and the Frog. This ride would be replaced by the Journey to Halloween Town attraction themed to the Nightmare Before Christmas.

Walt Disney World[]

In the Town Square Theatre's Mickey Mouse meet 'n' greet area is a room themed to Mickey Mouse's dressing-room for magic performances. On one of the shelves is a glowing green crystal-ball labelled, ""Leota" Crystals Model 1969" in reference to Madame Leota.[2]

Other Connections[]

Epic Mickey[]

In this video-game, players take on the role of Mickey Mouse within a twisted Disneyland known as the Wasteland which is inhabited by forgotten and discarded cartoon characters. In the game's Main Street counterpart, "Mean Street" guests encounter Horace Horsecollar who is a P.I. with a special interest in the case of Constance Hatchaway of Lonesome Manor. From here, Mickey gets a mission to journey to Lonesome Manor and retrieve Constance's hatchet as evidence of her matricide.

Main Street U.S.A.'s unbuilt, "Edison Square" area would also serve as an influence for the design of Bog Easy in the second game. Bog Easy being an analogue to New Orleans Square with elements of Critter Country and the Blue Bayou scene of Pirates of the Caribbean. This is where Lonesome Manor is located in the game.

Tales from the Haunted Mansion[]

In Tales from the Haunted Mansion: Volume I: The Fearsome Foursome, the story's narrator Amicus Arcane mentions having been acquainted with President Abraham Lincoln. In Disneyland (of which the books' mansion is mainly themed to) Abraham Lincoln is notably featured in the attraction Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln which is hosted in Main Street, U.S.A.'s town square Opera House.
