Gonzo, sometimes known by the performing titles of The Great Gonzo or Gonzo the Great, is the resident daredevil of the Muppets performing troupe. He is the main protagonist of Muppets Haunted Mansion.
Description[]
Created in 1970 as Snarl the Cigar Box Frackle for the Ed Sullivan Christmas special The Great Santa Claus Switch, Gonzo is a blue long nosed creature of ambiguous origin that generally refers to himself as a "Whatever" or a "Weirdo". Known for his stunt work, bizarre performance art, and his love of chickens, Gonzo is both energetically eccentric and introspective, with a number of segments and stories exploring the more melancholic parts of his personality.
Appearances[]
Muppets Haunted Mansion[]
On Halloween night, Gonzo is invited to the Haunted Mansion to take part in The Great Macguffin Halloween Challenge on the 100th anniversary of the legendary magician's disappearance and skips his friends traditional Halloween costume party. He is accompanied by Pepe the King Prawn, who mistakes the challenge for an elaborate celebrity Halloween party.
Not scaring easily from the Mansion's typical happy haunts, the Ghost Host sends Gonzo to face his greatest fears in Room 999, the most terrifying room in the Mansion. There, Gonzo encounters a magic mirror with a rapidly aging doppelganger representing Gonzo's fears that people only value him as "The Great Gonzo" and for his dangerous stuntwork, his loneliness, and that he might not see his friends again if he doesn't escape the Mansion. Briefly transforming into the decaying specter in the mirror, Gonzo comes to terms with these fears and by looking through the mirror into the party he's missing, is reminded of Kermit's words that he doesn't need to be "The Great Gonzo" to be great. The door unlocks and Gonzo is returned to his regular self and while he is now free to go, the Ghost Host tells him that Pepe has fallen into Constance's clutches and is unlikely to survive with dawn fast approaching. Guided to the Attic by the Ghost Host's Floating Candelabra, Gonzo and Pepe make a narrow escape from the window and reach the gates just in time, where the Ghost Host congratulates the two and reveals himself as the Great MacGuffin, giving Gonzo a signed playing card. When Gonzo and Pepe leave the Mansion by hearse to go to a post-Halloween breakfast with the Muppets, they find out that the Hitchhiking Ghosts have joined them.
