FoyerDL

"When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls... Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still... That is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight."

The Foyer serves as the main entrance to the Haunted Mansion and Phantom Manor, and is the first room guests enter.

Attractions[]

Disneyland[]

Guests enter the elegant-but-spartan foyer as a distant pipe organ plays a dirge-like version of Grim Grinning Ghosts. Wall-mounted candles and a cobweb-covered chandelier light the room, where two pairs of double-doors await. A mirror is at the entrance. As guests stand in the chamber, the voice of the Ghost Host welcomes them, and one of the doorways opens to admit guests into the Stretching Room.

Walt Disney World & Tokyo Disneyland[]

Guests gather around a fireplace in the foyer, above which hangs a portrait of a handsome young man. As the Ghost Host gives his narration the painting changes, its subject seeming to age before the viewers eyes until only a skeleton in a tattered suit remains. A door opens to the Stretching Room a moment later.

Phantom Manor[]

A ghostly voice (presumably the Phantom) extends a welcome to the "curious souls" that enter the foyer, describing how "beauty once lived in this house," and "lives here still." As he speaks, the image of a young woman, Melanie Ravenswood, appears in a mirror hanging in the corner while her voice can be heard singing. Afterwards, a panel in the wall opens, granting guests access to the Stretching Room.

Following the 2019 refurbishment, the mirror was replaced by a portrait of the Melanie and Henry Ravenswood, standing in front of a gloomy manor. The walls are covered in torn and worn wallpaper. As the mysterious voice welcomes guests to the manor, the portrait changes to show a happier Henry and Melanie in front of a pristine mansion. The wallpaper also changes, becoming once again pristine and clean, as it did during the manor's glory days, and Melanie's singing voice can then be heard. Afterwards, the voice invites guests to see more of the manor, leading them into the Stretching Room as before.

Other Appearances[]

The Haunted Mansion 2003 Film[]

The Foyer is depicted as a massive entryway in the film, its most prominent feature being a grand staircase. The Evers Family first step into the house here and are met by Ramsley, who escorts them down a long hall under the stairs that serves as the mansion's armory and through a pair of doors at the end into the ballroom.

The Haunted Mansion Video Game[]

The Foyer is modeled after the film's version, and serves as a hub for many of the other chambers in the mansion. For more detailed information, see Foyer (Video Game).

Trivia[]

  • At the Disneyland Mansion, the Ghost Host was originally going to deliver the opening monologue via a talking bust. This was notably featured in The Story and Song from the Haunted Mansion.
