The Face Armchair, unofficially known the Donald Duck chair is a form of furniture found within the Haunted Mansion.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The chair is a burgundy armchair with white stitching made to give it the appearance of a face. Four physical variants of the chair exist with additional alternate designs being found in concept art.

Hidden Donald[]

The chair is often stated to feature a "Hidden Donald" which serves as an Easter egg to the Mickey Mouse & Friends character of Donald Duck. This is in the same vain as Mickey Mouse cameos via Hidden Mickey.

While more likely than not in adverted, the resemblance is there with the identification noting: shape of the chair's head resembling the shape of Donald's sailor-hat, the furrowed brow resembling the brim of the hat, the smile and nose resembling Donald's duck-bill, and the lines around the eyes resembling the shape of Donald's head.

In New Orleans Square's mansion, the arm-chair most notably appears in the Endless Hallway scene, across from the haunted armour. It can later be found in the ballroom where the ghost of an elderly woman is sitting on it.

Walt Disney World & Tokyo Disneyland[]

The Florida and Japanese versions shared the same chair appearances as Anaheim's. In addition to these, it can be found within the library scene, albeit with a different build. In the November of 2023, the armchair was removed from Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion and replaced by a figure of the Hatbox Ghost from Disneyland's attraction.

Tokyo Disneyland's Spooky "Boo!" Parade incorporates the face design into its opening "Haunted Mansion Train" float.

History[]

The idea of the anthropomorphized chair came from imagineer Rolly Crump as part of his Museum of the Weird. Here it apparently would have been able to move and speak as a means of interacting with guests.[1]

The chair can also be found in unused Marc Davis artwork for the changing portrait of the burning miser.

Other Appearances[]

Haunted Mansion Parlor[]

The armchair appears as a prop in this Disney Cruise Line lounge.

Seekers of the Weird[]

In the Disney Kingdoms comic Seekers of the Weird, the arm-chair is referred to as the Walking Chair and is used by the protagonists as a mode of transportation throughout the Museum of the Wyrd.

2023 film[]

The chair makes an appearance in Madame Leota's séance chamber. When Bruce Davis arrives at the house, the Hatbox Ghost uses the chair to eject him out of the house, dragging him out onto the road where he is nearly run down by a truck.
