Claude's tombstone

"At peaceful rest lies Brother Claude
Planted here beneath this sod"
―Claude's tombstone

Brother Claude is one of the ghosts haunting the Haunted Mansion.

Description

In the family plot of the Haunted Mansion is a tombstone for "Brother Claude". No details are given about his life, which seems to have been uneventful, but from the epitaph it can be inferred that Claude had a brother or a sister, who outlived him and wrote said epitaph. Its presence in the family plot also implies that he was part of the wealthy family that once lived in the Mansion before it became Haunted (likely the Graceys).

Behind the scenes

  • The tombstone is a tribute to Imagineer Claude Coats, who is generally considered to be responsible for the atmospheric first half of the attraction.
  • Dodd's tombstone has the same epitaph as Brother Claude's.
  • In a variant cover for the Marvel comics, Claude's hand was seen lifting up the lid of his tomb, in a scene reminescent of the Coffin Occupant tableau.
